Brian and Arthur have known each other since they were but wee little tykes, and have been playing music together since they reconnected while studying at Oberlin College. Brian and Arthur (along with 3 other friends) spent much of their college years touring around the Midwest and New England with their band Gallimaufry, playing for contra dances. During that time, they discovered that they loved singing together, and had a knack for harmonizing with each other.
Brian has been dancing since he could walk, singing since he could speak, and holding a fiddle to his chin for most of his life. Surrounded by both contra dance and Irish music and dance throughout his childhood, Brian now finds the influences of many other musical styles and traditions make their way into his playing.
Arthur grew up steeped in the traditional music scene of Brattleboro, VT, singing with his family and learning to play piano for contra dancing. He later took up the clawhammer banjo and has been singing songs with the banjo ever since; everywhere from Vermont to Ohio to the decks of a tall-ship on the Pacific Ocean.
Together, Arthur and Brian play old-time tunes on the fiddle and banjo as well as singing in close harmonies. They are excited to share a unique blend of songs, tunes, and recitations that draws on their shared love of farming, maritime culture, and traditional folk music.
